Abstract: Competency-based instruction significantly increases the likelihood of adequately preparing students for the world of work. This is a major objective of TVET. Thus, the goal of this inquiry was to examine competency models and the teaching of apparel patternmaking in Ghana. It identifies the origins and introduction of competency-based training models in Ghana and examines the gaps that exist between the desired competencies needed for teaching the subject successfully and the challenges that are affecting instructors’ competencies. This study employs a descriptive survey design approach; thus, questionnaires were developed and utilised to collect data from the respondents. In order to enable the researchers to use their judgment to select cases that will best facilitate the answering of research questions and meet the objectives of the study, the most common type of non-probability sampling - purposive sampling was used. The sample comprised a total of 119 Participants - eight (8) instructors and one hundred and one (111) students from each of the four Polytechnics. The major empirical findings of the study demonstrate that in CBT, instructors focus their attention on what students have to do and not how they do it. The results also imply that regarding adoption of the different approaches to competency models, the Polytechnics implement competency-based models that are closely aligned with the vision, values and mission which provide broad, quick and consistent impacts. Concerning approaches to teaching apparel pattern making, the results indicate that Polytechnic students are able to transform three-dimensional (3D) fashion designs into two-dimensional (2D) constituent pattern pieces. On strategies to improve competencies, it was discovered that only a few Polytechnics surveyed have sufficient teaching and learning resources for effective academic work.

Abstract: The study assessed the knowledge of dressmakers on darts in pattern making and garment designing. Specifically, the purpose of this research was to evaluate the knowledge of dressmakers’ on darts and the application of dart principles (dart manipulation, adding fullness and contouring) in garment designing. Descriptive research design was employed for the study using 50 dress makers selected from three districts in the central region of Ghana. A semi-structured interview guide and an observation check list were the instruments used for data collection. The data collected were analysed with the help of descriptive statistics using the Predictive Analytical Software for windows version 22. The results indicated that the dressmakers studied knew what darts are and their purpose in garment design and construction, but lacked knowledge as to how to apply the principles of darts to achieve desired effects. It is recommended that the importance of darts with special reference to marking it out accurately is emphasized to dressmakers during workshops, seminars and general meetings that are organized by their association. Stakeholders in the garment industry especially those in academia could also organise workshops for garment makers to educate them on the appropriate use of darts in garment design and construction.

Abstract: Upholstery making is the art of producing functional cushioned for homes and offices. Upholstery making involves the skills in: upholstery design, hand tools handling, car-case construction, and webbing, cording, padding and covering with fabric. The main purpose of the study was to upskill the upholstery making skills of technical college students for job creation. Specifically, the study was poised to determine the upholstery padding skills need of technical college students for job creation, and the fabric covering skills need of technical college students for job creation. Two research questions and two null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Descriptive survey design was employed for the study. The population of study was 86 respondents. The study purposively used the total population as the size was manageable. A 82-item questionnaire was developed and used for the study. The instrument was face validated by three experts from the technical unit of the Department of Vocational Education, University of Uyo, Uyo. The reliability co-efficient of 0.82 was obtained which ensured its internal consistency. Mean was used to answer the research questions while t-test was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level. The result revealed that upholstery padding and fabric covering skills were required for job creation. It was concluded that the students need upskilling on these skills to be able to create jobs after graduation. Hence, it was recommended that technical college teachers should guide upholstery making students to upskill their competencies in upholstery padding and covering skills by exposing them to practical classes as well as work experiences while in school.
